When people imagine a leader, they often think about someone with an authoritarian attitude—someone like Vladimir Putin. They might imagine an enigmatic and demanding genius—perhaps Elon Musk or Steve Jobs. Or perhaps someone at times coldly and ruthlessly devoted to their cause, like Queen Elizabeth to her crown. These are common leadership archetypes.

Too often people emulate dictators, mistaking tyranny for leadership.

Yet, despite preconceived notions, the most effective leaders are often none of these things. Instead, they are kind, consistent, and treat others with dignity and respect.

In fact, love can be a leader’s greatest competitive advantage.

Treating others with dignity and respect has worked for me with every team I’ve led – from Merrill Lynch to TDAmeritrade to Coastal Carolina University’s football team. When people are met with kindness, they try harder, they make fewer mistakes, and they handle stress better.

You don’t have to take my word for it. The power of kindness is backed up by research, and according to the Harvard Business Review it “yields positive outcomes for businesses,” and “being kind to your employees can help you retain top talent, establish a thriving culture, increase employee engagement, and enhance productivity.”

But what does it mean to be a kind leader? And how can you be kind but also make the tough decisions—from layoffs to firing someone—and be kind at the same time? It requires empathy as well as the ability to think in terms of the greater good.

Kindness doesn’t mean letting others walk all over you, tolerating excuses, or ignoring mistakes. Instead, you have to treat others the way you would like to be treated in the same situation.

This is a basic postulate of freedom and of life, and most people instinctively respond positively to it, even when things are tough. Being accountable is part of respecting yourself and being dignified. In the same way, holding others accountable for their actions is part of respecting them. This is common sense.

Likewise, no one wants to be treated unfairly or harshly, but most people understand when a situation is truly difficult. Great leaders acknowledge and address situations where someone has been treated unfairly. Failing to do this means individuals won’t trust that you’re looking out for the interests of the whole team.

This implies a second core tenant for leading with kindness: As a leader, you must be committed to the wellbeing of others. If you’re in it for yourself, or only serve your shareholders (at the expense of your employees or clients), then you’ll quickly erode trust and goodwill.

Communicating that you are committed to your team’s wellbeing can be hard, though, when they number in the hundreds or thousands. It’s impossible to talk to each of them individually.

Instead, you must make a special effort to communicate to the group and ensure your actions demonstrate you care. You have to be clear about how you balance the needs of the team against those of the clients and the shareholders.

You also shouldn’t coddle your team. Instead, you have to trust them with the truth.

And just because you’re in a leadership position doesn’t make you better than anyone else on your team. It’s about the people you serve. It’s not about ego. In fact, it’s not about the leader at all.

All of this adds up to love, which isn’t something people usually talk about in business (or sports). But if you buy these principles—that you should treat others with dignity and respect—it amounts to love. Love is the foundation on which leadership is executed, and not only will your team perform better, but you’ll also feel better about yourself.

It’s not easy, but if you practice kindness every day, your team will persevere through hard times and win in good times.
